After 40 years with State College borough, assistant borough manager for public safety and former police chief Tom King is officially retiring at the end of October.

Borough Manager Tom Fountaine announced King’s retirement at Monday night’s council meeting.

King was hired as a State College police officer in 1981 and, after moving up the ranks over the next decade, he was appointed chief of police in April 1993.

He served in that role for the next 23 years before retiring in August 2016, but quickly stepped into a new role in borough administration.

As assistant borough manager for public safety over the last five years, King has overseen the Police Department, Department of Health and Neighborhood Service and Community Engagement Office.

“Tom leaves a huge legacy of public service both as a police officer and a chief of police but also in the work he has done with the administrative staff,” Fountaine said. “He has provided tremendous service to this community and the community is much better off because of that. I will personally miss Tom’s work and assistance but the community more importantly will miss Tom’s work.”
