Patton Township police next month will stop vehicles with burned-out headlights, broken taillights and other faulty lighting, the department announced Tuesday.

The department will run ‘Operation Lights Out’ from Friday through April 15, according to a news release. Officers will ‘initiate traffic stops when a vehicle-code violation related to vehicle lighting is observed,’ it reads.

‘Officers will inform the driver of the violation and explain the program,’ it continues. ‘Generally, a faulty-equipment warning card will be issued to the motorist. This card allows the motorist adequate time to correct the problem, and to notify police that it has been resolved. Depending on the circumstances of the stop, traffic citations may be issued instead.’

Vehicles that lack proper lighting can create a hazard on the road, police said.
