Centre County polling places were off to a busy start as voters headed out to cast their ballots for the 2018 midterm elections.
In Pennsylvania, more than 8.6 million people are registered to vote this year, a record number for a midterm election. In Centre County 111,139 people were registered as of late October, up from 107,847 last year’s municipal elections and 108,218 during the last midterm in 2014.
Reports from around the county indicated heavy voter turnout, and County Administrator Margaret Gray said no problems had been reported at polling places on Tuesday morning.
‘All things going well, lots of people at the polls,’ Gray said at the weekly Board of Commissioners meeting.
Polls are open until 8 p.m., but Commissioner Michael Pipe reminded anyone who is still in line at that time that they can still cast their ballot.
‘There may be longer lines than normal just because of the excitement and enthusiasm people are experiencing,’ Pipe said. ‘The one thing we want to encourage people is to stay in line. If they’re in line at 8 o’clock they can vote. The demand to vote this year is quite high… and we want to get as many people in to vote as possible.’
Centre County Report’s Claire Going checked in at polling locations in downtown State College where things were busy early on Tuesday.
