A 21-year-old man attempted to strangle a woman and a young girl late Sunday in State College, according to borough police.
The man, identified as Roque ‘Oliver’ Perez, of State College, was jailed Monday in the Centre County Correctional Facility, where he remained Tuesday. District Judge Jonathan Grine set bail at $100,000, police said.
According to a police-written criminal complaint, Perez attacked the woman shortly before midnight Sunday in his Southgate Drive residence.
The woman, who is pregnant, could not breathe and passed out during the assault, the criminal complaint indicates.
Perez did not release the woman until his brother — a neighbor — physically intervened, the document shows.
In the same attack, police said, Perez attempted to strangle the woman’s daughter. The daughter is of elementary-school age.
Both the woman and the girl had injuries consistent with attempted strangulation, police said.
Perez is charged with aggravated assault — a felony — and misdemeanor-level offenses: simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
He moved to State College from Chambersburg about two weeks ago, according to testimony in the complaint.
Next in the court process is a preliminary hearing.
