The coolers are cleared and the shelves are ready as McLanahan’s Downtown Market makes way for beer sales to begin this summer.
The store, located at 116 S. Allen St. in State College, applied for the license to sell beer and wine for consumption inside and for takeout in June 2017 after hearing from customers that they would like to have the option available.
“People come into a grocery store, especially from out of State College, and they expect to find beer, so we are glad we will be able to provide that for them in the future,” said manager Jim French.
New to Centre County will be a self-serve beer tap that will allow customers to choose which beer they wish to purchase from an automated beer machine after purchasing a card from a store employee. The tap will have 20 different types of beer available to purchase.
“One of the nice things about the self-serve beer tap is that you can try different types, just a couple ounces at a time. This way, customers can try different things and see what they like,” said French.
Along with the self-serve tap, the store plans to carry a wide variety of bottled and canned beer.
“We hope to become the destination for craft beer in State College,” said French.
In the future, the store plans to add a self-serve wine tap and bottled wine. After everything is set up, McClanahan’s will need to wait for inspections by the borough and state, so French said he does not have an exact start date yet, but is hoping to be ready to go at some point in June.
