An public event honoring the life of the late Lt. Michael P. Murphy is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday on the Penn State University Park campus, the Senior Class Gift Committee announced.
The gathering will feature Lt. Murphy’s parents, Daniel and Maureen Murphy, and author Gary Williams, who wrote the bestselling book ‘Seal of Honor: Operation Red Wings and the Life of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, USN.’
To be held in Kern Building, the event’s name is ‘Medal of Honor: The Life of Lt. Michael P. Murphy.’ There will be no charge for admission to the gathering, which will give people a chance to learn more about Murphy and to ask questions, according to organizers.
Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL, was the first Penn State alumnus to receive the Medal of Honor. He was awarded the medal posthumously, after his death in June 2005 in Afghanistan. He was serving there when he came under Taliban fire.
In November 2010, the Penn State class of 2011 Gift Committee announced that its class gift will be a military veterans plaza. It will be named the Lt. Michael P. Murphy/Penn State Veterans Plaza, honoring Murphy and all other Penn State veterans.
