The Special Olympics plays an important part in the lives of its athletes, allowing them to compete, have fun and make friends. And just like any athletic activity, athlete health screenings are a necessary part of athletic process. Special Olympics Pennsylvania is now offering MedFest, a free sport medical screening as well as a dental screening, called Special Smiles, to eligible individuals on Saturday.

The screening will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Penn State Sports Medicine at 1850 East Park Avenue, State College. Look for the Penn State Nittany Lion as well as some Penn State student athletes.

The event is a way to help keep athletes involved with Special Olympics Pennsylvania and also recruit new athletes. New athletes to Special Olympics Pennsylvania will be able to sign-up for the upcoming sports available in the area.

MedFest promises to be fun for all involved, with activities between screenings and goodie bags for the ride home. Free transportation is available. Online registration is available here.

‘To be eligible to participate, individuals must have an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay, or a development disability, that is, functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills,’ according to a news release. ‘However, individuals whose functional limitations are based solely on a physical, behavioral, or emotional disability, or a specific learning or sensory disability, are not eligible to participate. Participation in Special Olympics starts at age 8 years, and there’s no maximum age limit.’
