A small earthquake in southern Juniata County on Wednesday night was felt across a broad swath of central Pennsylvania.
The earthquake, confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey with a preliminary magnitude of 3.4, originated at 8:30 p.m. about 11 miles southwest of Mifflintown.
According to the USGS, light shaking and rumbling was reported in State College, which is about 40 miles from where the earthquake occurred, and other parts of Centre County. Many reports also came from the Harrisburg, Lancaster, and York areas and south-central Pennsylvania, but it also was reportedly felt as far west as Altoona and as far south as Maryland.
It’s the largest earthquake reported in at least the past year in Pennsylvania, according to Earthquake Track.
Earthquakes in the 3.0-3.9 magnitude range are minor, according to the USGS, and while they can be felt and cause some shaking, rarely result in damage.
