After being absent from the Centre Region for about eight years, Kentucky Fried Chicken is ready to open for business again in State College.

The chain’s new location at 1780 S. Atherton St. is scheduled to open on Tuesday, according to signs posted in the restaurant’s windows.

Hours for the dining room and drive-through will be 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.

Plans for the 2,800-square foot KFC were submitted to the borough in May 2018, and the following month borough council approved a conditional use permit for a motor vehicle-oriented business, allowing for the drive through.

The former Santander bank building located on the site was demolished earlier this year to make way for construction of the restaurant.

The new KFC is located along Branch Road, next to the plaza containing Rothrock Coffee, Honeybaked Ham, Subway and other establishments.

Before construction of the new restaurant, KFC last had a State College area location at 2020 N. Atherton St. That closed in in 2011 and Kranich’s Jewelers opened a store at the site in 2012. Another KFC also was previously located at 1525 S. Atherton St., not far from the new location, but closed in the early 2000s and is now the location of Sakura.
