Becca Brittain knows that owning a business isn’t easy.

If being the proprietor of the Goin’ Postal shipping center in Lewistown for the past eight years has taught her anything, it’s that customers don’t start lining up as soon as you open your doors.

That’s why she knew what to expect when she recently expanded the business to State College.

“We’ve been in Lewistown for eight years and we still have people come in most weeks who say they didn’t know we were there,” Brittain says. “It’s tough.”

Located at 1341 S. Atherton St., Goin’ Postal has been open in State College for less than two weeks. Brittain says the start-up has been smooth yet slow.

Still, she has reason to believe that business will begin to pick up, as the company’s new sign went up over the store on Monday. Previously, a sign for the previous owner’s business, a Kumon Learning Center, hung in its place.

““We’ve only been open for about a week so things have been good but they’ve been slow,” Brittain says. “[Monday] we had a few people come in but I think having the sign up is going to make a huge difference.”

What exactly does Goin’ Postal do? As a shipping company, they send packages both big and small through FedEx, UPS, the U.S. Postal Service and DHL Express. They also offer freight service.

What separates Goin’ Postal from competitors in Brittain’s eyes is the variety of services that they offer.

Apart from shipping, Goin’ Postal also sells office supplies, stamps, greeting cards, ink cartridges and printing and fax services. They also will package items for customers if needed.

“There’s nothing too big that we can’t ship as long as it’s legal,” Brittain says. “We can do it all or they can come in with the item already packaged.”

Operated by Brittain and her husband Dennis, Goin’ Postal prides itself on friendly customer service.

According to Brittain, every customer is given the chance to evaluate every shipping option to choose the one they prefer. “Our software brings up every option with every carrier, Brittain says. “That way our customers can price shop.”

The new branch in State College gives Goin’ Postal 11 stores throughout Pennsylvania. Open since 2002, the franchise has over 500 stores nationwide.

Despite the slow start, Brittain believes they will be fine due to her previous experience running the branch in Lewistown.

“We know what we’re doing now,” Brittain says with a chuckle.
