Update April 4: The Nittany Mall reopened on Saturday, April 4.
The Nittany Mall is temporarily closed at the order of the Centre Region Code Administration because of a water main break on Thursday afternoon.
The break happened at the corner of the mall behind Gabe’s.
Centre Region Code and College Township Water Authority staff were on site assessing the situation at the 2901 E. College Ave. shopping center early Thursday evening. The break caused a lack of adequate water pressure and shutdown of the mall’s fire suppression system, leading the code office to evacuate the building and order it closed, College Township Assistant Manager Mike Bloom said.
Signs were posted at each entrance. Rural King, which is an adjacent but separate property, was not affected and remained open.
Bloom initially said on Thursday evening that he anticipated repairs would be completed Friday morning to allow for a partial or full reopening. The mall, however, remained closed as n Friday afternoon.
Ville Billy’s pizzeria, a mall tenant, wrote on Facebook on Friday afternoon that “the issue is being resolved but we will not be open today.” Planet Fitness had listed on its mall location’s website a 4 p.m. opening on Friday, but later changed it to closed for the day.
The water line is privately owned and the mall owner Namdar Realty Group is responsible for the repairs, a township employee on site said.
Namdar and mall management did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday. The mall’s website and social media accounts have not acknowledged the closure.
