As State College baseball gets set for its home opener at 4:15 p.m. on Monday against Central Dauphin, the Little Lions will be looking to take things a step further from 2017.

Last year State College made it to the 6A semifinals, where the Little Lions fell 6-1 to Dallastown. That squad was keyed by dominant pitching, but with top starters Mason Mellott and Gavin Schaefer-Hood graduated, Coach Troy Allen says the team will need production at the plate to get State High where it wants to be at the end of the season.

The Little Lions return eight key players, including senior infielder Matt Tomczuk who hit .377 last year.

‘I think there’s unfinished business,’ Tomczuk said. ‘I think we’re going to see Dallastown again and they’ve got a bunch of guys returning, but luckily we have most of our position players returning. We’re going to need some pitchers to step up.’
