PAWS coughs up successful Fur Ball

Centre County PAWS will be wagging its tail in the very near future.

Last night, about 150 guests attended the Fur Ball at the Centre County Country Club. There they were treated to dinner, an auction from which all proceeds will go to local no-kill shelter PAWS, and a live band to wrap up the evening.

As guests munched on filet mignon or chocolate fudge cake topped with a handmade candy paw print, bidding began on everything from sports gear to vacations.

Fred Metzger started the bidding with $700 for a Steelers jersey signed by Troy Polamalu. Other items auctioned off included a vacation to Key West ($2,200), a custom hand-painted cat statue ($850, purchased by Leslie Lloyd), hand-woven rugs ($3,300 each), a necklace ($2,000, purchased by Lee Metzger) and a private gig by the Fur Ball’s hired band, “Keena.”

The enthusiastic Metzger worked the crowd wonderfully, bringing in thousands of dollars, all of which would be donated to PAWS.

Keena performed a mix, kicking things off with “Nothin’ Better to Do” by Leanne Rimes. Other musical selections included modern country hits to older country-rock, with a few oddballs thrown in (Enter Sandman by Metallica, for example).

Guests who remained danced and sang karaoke until the performance ended at 11 p.m.
