Former Miami of Ohio senior guard Allen Roberts is looking to make Penn State his new home. Roberts opted to transfer to Happy Valley earlier this week. Alex Kline of Rivals.com first reported the verbal commitment that will help coach Patrick Chambers fill the void left by Jermaine Marshall. Marshall, the Nittany Lions’ second leading scorer, decided to turn pro instead of playing his senior season.
“I really was impressed by Coach Chambers enthusiastic attitude,” Roberts told StateCollege.com. “I can tell he’s a winner and wants to be great. I’ll add the competitive fire to the team and be another offensive threat while providing intensity.”
Roberts has one year of eligibility remaining after redshirting his junior season. The 6-foot-3, 214 pound guard was injured 28 games into the season with a minor meniscus tear; an injury he doesn’t consider to be serious anymore.
While at Miami (Ohio) Roberts averaged 12.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game this year while shooting 38.8 percent from the field. He will look to boost Penn State’s impressive guard tandem of D.J. Newbill and Tim Frazier. Roberts is one of six new players making a debut in Happy Valley next year. He will join four incoming freshman and guard transfer John Johnson on the active roster.
“Exciting,” Roberts said about the chance to play with Newbill and Fraizer. “I can’t wait to help those guys be the winners they deserve to be.”
