Penn State Basketball: Chambers Addresses Newbill In FBI Probe

Former Penn State guard D.J. Newbill’s name was among a handful that surfaced on Friday in a report related to the FBI’s ongoing investigation into former NBA agent Andy Miller and others. Penn State coach Pat Chambers declined comment while speaking to the media for a scheduled conference call not long after the story was published on Friday morning.

On Saturday evening Chambers issued a statement, first through Blue White Illustrated, to address the issue.

“I have no connection or association with Andy Miller or his agency. The University is looking into the information released on Friday. As I have stated, this program is committed to doing things the right way.” Chambers said.

At this time it’s unclear what Newbill’s connection to the investigation is. He was among 25 current and former college basketball players listed as receiving loans from Miller’s ASM Sports agency on a ledger sheet obtained by Yahoo! Sports and reported Friday morning.

Newbill’s name was found on the ledger dated ‘As of December 2015,’ nine months after his Penn State career had concluded. It stated that Newbill had received a $2,000 loan. Newbill’s professional career began overseas. 

An additional AMS document published by Yahoo! Sports indicated that Newbill was scheduled to pay off the loan in the summer of 2017.

Newbill is represented by Stephen Pina of ASM Sports. Pina represents multiple players under more substantial investigation by the FBI.
