Penn State Basketball: Chambers’ Comments Earn $10,000 Fine From Big Ten

It was only a matter of time.

The Big Ten issued a public reprimand of Penn State men’s basketball coach Pat Chambers on Tuesday, for his comments following Penn State’s game against Maryland on Feb. 14.

In addition, the conference says it’s fined Penn State $10,000, the standard amount for such a violation.

The rule in question is Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01, which states in part that: “The Big Ten Conference expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of the competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials.”

Chambers’ issue with the officiating, specifically an offensive foul called on Jordan Dickerson with less than two minutes to play was certainly warranted by nearly all accounts. Even so the rule is in place – at least in theory – to help protect referees who are often required to make judgement calls.

The Big Ten offered no comment on the call in question.

“Saturday is over with.” Chambers said on Monday. “I’m passionate about my players, I’m passionate about my program and I will fight for these guys every second that I’m the head coach here and every minute for this university for these fans and for these alums. But it’s over. We have to move on to Wisconsin. Know that Sandy Barbour and I have met, and that she is 100 percent behind me. Which is awesome. She likes everything that we’re doing, loves everything that we’re doing. The direction of the program. Loves our fight and our dedication.”
