Penn State’s basketball program will host the 19th annual Coaches Vs. Cancer golf tournament on Friday for what is expected to be another star filled outing with an unexpectedly NBA twist.

More than 300 golfers and 60 groups are participating in the tournament, which stands as the flagship event for the year-round CVC-Penn State program. CVC-Penn State has topped the $2 million mark in fundraising since its inception in 2013 and is now quickly closing in on $2.5 million.

This year the tournament will feature a handful of NBA stars, former Penn State players, current head coaches and department leaders.

NBA All-Star Kyle Lowry, who played for Penn State Men’s Basketball Coach Patrick Chambers and with assistant coach Dwayne Anderson at Villanova, will captain a foursome Friday. Five-time NBA Champion Ron Harper also will tee it up with a group as he participates in the CVC tourney for the second-consecutive year.

Former Nittany Lion head basketball coaches Jerry Dunn and Bruce Parkhill, along with players Brian Allen (1986-89), Nick Colella (2012-13), Craig Collins (1982-85), Joe Crispin (1998-2001), Jon Crispin (2000-01), Tim Frazier (2010-14), Ben Luber (2004-07), Danny Morrissey (2005-09), Glenn Sekunda (1995-96), Tyler Smith (1999-2002), Ross Travis (2012-15) and Alan Wisniewski (2012-15) all will be on hand Friday.

James Franklin is scheduled to participate in events Friday, while Penn State’s athletic director Sandy Barbour and nine other Nittany Lion head coaches – Rob Cooper (baseball), Missy Doherty (women’s lacrosse), Guy Gadowsky (men’s hockey), Char Morett (field hockey), Greg Nye (men’s golf), Mark Pavlik (men’s volleyball), Jeff Thompson (women’s gymnastics), Erica Walsh (women’s soccer) and Bob Warming (men’s soccer) – each will golf as part of groups.

Nationally, Coaches Vs Cancer has raised more than $87 million for cancer research and awareness.
