Penn State freshman center Mike Watkins has not been cleared by the NCAA to play for the Nittany Lions this season coach Patrick Chambers announced after Saturday’s 62-50 win over VMI.
“We are working with the NCAA very closely,” Chambers said. “The most important thing for Mike is his adjustment to college, us surrounding him with care, and helping him on his journey.”
“We want to make sure that he’s going to strive on and off the floor and we feel really good about it. Mike’s done a good job to date.”
Chambers provided little additional information regarding Watkins’ return including a timeline for his possible return or change in status. “I wish I could give you a definitive timeline but I have no idea.” Chambers said.
As of right now Watkins is still enrolled at Penn State although his ability to practice with the team is still unclear at this time. Watkins was seen sitting behind the basket Saturday cheering on his teammates. A member of Penn State’s highly touted 2015 recruiting class, Watkins would have played this season although a fairly raw prospect, a redshirt season as he sorts things out off the court may not be the worst turn of events for him.
“Things happen for a reason and I’m looking forward to Mike excelling on an off the floor,” Chambers concluded.
