Penn State coach Pat Chambers announced on Thursday night that Mike Watkins has been ruled out of Sunday’s matchup at Nebraska after suffering a right knee injury in Wednesday’s 72-63 loss against No. 17 Michigan.
Watkins was injured in the early minutes of Wednesday night’s game and was assisted off the court. He returned to the game with 7:17 left in the first half, but was visibly injured, struggling to move well at all. Watkins did not return from the locker room following halftime.
Chambers offered no insight into Watkins’ longterm status as it pertains to the Big Ten Tournament or the nature of the injury. While Watkins misses time, Penn State will lean on the likes of senior Julian Moore, junior Satchel Pierce, and freshman John Harrar. Forward Lamar Stevens also played at the five against Michigan but it seems unlikely he will retain that role over those previous mentioned players.
Watkins is currently averaging 12.1 points and 8.9 rebounds on the season. Watkins is shooting 68.5 percent from the field to lead the Big Ten. He is also fourth in the Big Ten with 2.3 blocked shots per game.
Penn State takes on Nebraska on Sunday at 5:15 p.m. to finish the regular season.
