Penn State quarterbacks Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin are both expected to play Saturday in the university’s football-season opener at Beaver Stadium, Coach Joe Paterno said Tuesday.
‘Both those kids have done really well. … They’re both ready to play,’ Paterno said in a weekly media briefing at midday. He said both quarterbacks have done ‘everything we’ve asked them to do’ and can lead well.
Paterno indicated that he has not decided which quarterback will start, WJAC’s Matt Maisel reported on Twitter.
The Nittany Lions’ game against Indiana State is scheduled to kick off at noon Saturday at Beaver Stadium. It will be carried live on the Big Ten Network.
Uncertain is whether Paterno will be on the sidelines for the game. He suffered arm and hip injuries during a practice session in early August, and appeared at Tuesday’s media briefing with a cane.
Paterno told reporters that some ‘medical people’ want him to coach from a box at Beaver Stadium on Saturday. But ‘that being upstairs is for the birds,’ he said.
‘I like to be on the sideline, get a feel for things … ,’ Paterno said. He said odds are 50/50 as to whether he’ll be on the sidelines for the Indiana State game.
‘Sometimes you have to do what you think you can do — and not what somebody else thinks you can do,’ Paterno said.
