Penn State’s quarterback race is still in it’s earliest stages, but that hasn’t kept fans from speculating who will take the first snap when the Nittany Lions hit the field at the end of August.
For head coach Bill O’Brien the race is less speculative and more a measure of how each candidate, junior college transfer Tyler Ferguson (No. 5), and freshman Christian Hackenberg (No. 14) can handle the role in practice. Only a handful of practices deep into training camp it’s not easy to pick a leader just yet, but O’Brien gives the nod to Ferguson so far if only because of his time already spent on campus.
A starter is expected to be named within the first two weeks of camp, but O’Brien cautioned fans and the media not to hold him to an exact date saying it could be later rather than sooner that the final call is made.
