Penn State and Pitt still have to wait until 2016 for their rivalry to be renewed but the series could be extended past the scheduled four game home-and-home series.
The Nittany Lions will face off against Pittsburgh in 2016 on the road and Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said in a recent interview that he hopes the series can continue for more than just the four scheduled games.
“I hope we can continue to keep that going forward,” Pederson said. “[Penn State athletic director] Dave Joyner and I continue to have conversations.”
Penn State holds a 48-42-4 series lead over the Panthers with Pitt picking up the most recent victory in the intrastate clash by a 12-0 margin in 2000. The Nittany Lions will be at home in 2017 and 2019 which would likely mean an extended series could send Penn State back on the road in 2020 if the head-to-head meetings were to continue that season.
Nittany Lion head coach James Franklin hasn’t been shy about wanting to play games at home but it’s hard to imagine he would turn down the chance to extend the series even if it meant a few road trips.
Looking further ahead into Penn State’s future schedules, here are a few games that may have been forgotten by Nittany Lion fans.
- San Diego State (2015)
- West Virginia (2023,2024)
- Virginia Tech (2022,2023)
It’s hard to say what Penn State football will look like in 10 years, but even so, there are plenty of games to circle on the calendar.
