Surprise, surprise, Adam Breneman is headed to Penn State.

Really, it was no surprise.

As expected, the nation’s No. 1 tight end prospect, according to Rivals.com, announced Friday night that he would play football for the Nittany Lions during a news conference at Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill, Pa. His verbal commitment is not binding until he signs a letter of intent in February.

Breneman, 6-foot-5, 220-pounds, grew up a Nittany Lions fan and has been mentored by former Penn State All-American tight end Kyle Brady, also from Cedar Cliff.

Breneman had said he liked Penn State coach Bill O’Brien’s offensive scheme, one that will prominently feature the tight end like it did when he served as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

He also considered Ohio State, Notre Dame and Maryland.
