It’s safe to say that James Franklin’s recruiting momentum is reaching unprecedented levels of success as New Jersey native and offensive tackle Steven Gonzalez verbally committed to Penn State on Saturday according to multiple recruiting outlets.
The commitment gives the Nittany Lions 10 verbal commitments in the 2015 recruiting class seven of which are rated at the four-star level. Gonzalez hails from Union City and weighs in at 321 pounds, standing 6-foot-4.
As Franklin looks to address depth issues along the offensive front Gonzalez is another addition to a growing stockpile of young talent headed to State College in the coming years.
While all of Penn State’s commitments have been noteworthy in a new era of football in Happy Valley, Gonzalez told Cleveland.com in February that Ohio State held a significant lead in his recruiting process. Gonzalez also noted that after picking up an offer from Penn State that his interest in the program was gaining momentum.
So for Penn State, the commitment marks not only the addition of talent but a win in a recruiting battle against regional and conference rival Ohio State and head coach Urban Meyer.
Rated the third best offensive tackle in the state by Rivals.com, Gonzalez held offers from multiple schools aside Penn State and Ohio State such as Wisconsin, Boston College, South Carolina, and Michigan State.
Penn State’s 2015 recruiting class is rated No.2 and No.3 in the nation per the 247 Network and Rivals.com respectively.
