Penn State 2013 verbal commit Greg Webb, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound, four-star defensive tackle from Timber Creek High School in New Jersey, decommitted from Penn State and verbally committed to North Carolina Saturday.
Webb marks the first decommit since former Penn State assistant Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of 48 charges and the release of the Freeh report, Penn State’s independent investigation in to the culture and cover-up of Sandusky’s conduct by university administrators and former head coach Joe Paterno.
Webb had more than 30 scholarship offers from schools such as Alabama, Ohio State, Rutgers, Temple and Iowa, among several others, and was the seventh commit of Penn State’s 2013 class.
Unlike many of the class figureheads such as Cedar Cliff High School’s Adam Breneman, the nation’s top-ranked tight end, Webb was never particularly vocal following his commitment.
The combination of his family’s plans to move farther south and Penn State’s lack of interest in high school teammate Dajaun Drennon likely played a role in Webb’s decommitment.
As possible sanctions by Penn State and the NCAA loom on the horizon, Webb will not be the only high profile Penn State commit to look at other options down the road. However, for the moment, the rest of the Nittany Lions’ 2013 class is standing pat.
Following Webb’s announcement, Drennon confirmed to Inside Carolina that he too had committed to North Carolina.
