Penn State Football: Jim Harbaugh And Michigan Set Work Football Camp In Pennsylvania

This is gonna be good. 

Taking James Franklin’s idea and making it his own, Michigan’s newest head coach Jim Harbaugh and the entire Wolverine staff will speak at and co-host the 12th Annual Lauren’s First and Goal Football Camp on Sunday, June 7 at Lafayette College in Easton, PA.

While Penn State can’t argue with the cause (the one-day football camp for high school players is the primary fundraiser for the foundation, which provides financial support for brain tumor research and cancer services) it’s fitting that Franklin’s own plan to work at camps in key recruiting areas will see another rival school entering his own recruiting territory.

“Coach Harbaugh has had tremendous success as a quarterback and Head Football Coach both in college and in the NFL,” John Loose, an assistant football coach at Army said in the announcement. Loose created the foundation in honor of his daughter Lauren. “He will have a great message for the athletes, coaches and parents. We are extremely excited to welcome him and his staff as our guests at Lauren’s First and Goal.”

Penn State hosted a few camps last summer deep in SEC territory, in a move that ruffled more than a few feathers because the Big Ten allows for such camps while the SEC does not. The idea behind the co-hosting? If a recruit can’t come to Happy Valley for a visit, bring Penn State football to him.

While it’s probably safe to assume Michigan won’t be setting up shop in Eastern Pennsyvania for the long term, it will make for great theater to see Harbaugh and his coaching staff recruiting less than 30 miles from East Stroudsburg where Franklin went to college.

Michigan will host at least one more camp in Alabama this summer as well as in Houston, Tampa and California according to reports. Harbaugh and company haven’t forgotten to rile up the folks at Ohio State either by hiring one of the state’s best high school coaches in Rick Finotti. He coached Lakewood St. Edward High School near Cleveland to two state championships. Finotti will work as Michigan football’s director of operations.

Penn State hosts Michigan for the final home game of the season but it seems the fireworks are starting well before that game ever gets here.
