Penn State linebacker Ben Kline will apparently miss significant time. Team sources confirm to State College.com that Kline has been injured again.
Sean Fitz of Lions247 first reported the news late Tuesday night that Kline had torn his Achilles tendon during a workout.
Kline struggled to stay on the field last season as he dealt with chest and pectoral injuries. As a result of those medical problems he only appeared in six games.
Kline’s season ended officially in November after he underwent surgery to repair the damaged pectoral muscle.
Heading into this season Kline was slated to compete for time at the outside linebacking spot, alongside the likes of Nyeem Wartman and Gary Wooten. Kline’s injury will leave Mike Hull, Brandon Bell, Wartman and Wooten as the most experienced linebackers on the roster.
Freshman Jascon Cabinda and Troy Reeder will likely contribute as well. Neither of those players has arrived on campus yet. They’re due in town later this month.
In addition to his contributions on the field, Kline is the president of Penn State’s Uplifting Athletes chapter.
“I’ll tell you this. He hasn’t done anything athletically since we’ve got there, but Ben Kline has a presence,” Franklin said during a Coaches Caravan stop “He’s a tremendous leader, he’s respected unbelievably by his teammates. He’s involved with every aspect of community service that you could possibly be involved in. He does everything. Every time I’m on Twitter he’s doing something in the community.”
Kline now joins starting guard Miles Dieffenbach on the list of significant injuries so far this season. Dieffenbach reportedly tore his anterior cruciate ligament. Penn State has not confirmed either of the injuries and according to Franklin’s own personal policy the program may never officially acknowledge the setbacks.
