Some quick housekeeping from Bill O’Brien’s appearance Thursday night on ‘The Goon Show,’ a State College-based radio program co-hosted by former Penn State offensive lineman Keith Conlin and Tim Sweeney, president of the Penn State Football Letterman’s Club.
- O’Brien clarified some comments regarding oversigning, saying he won’t cut a player because he’s not talented enough to play. O’Brien told the Atlanta Journal Constitution earlier this month he was in the process of evaluating the roster and that “there’s some definite advantages in [oversigning].”
- Redshirt sophomore Dakota Royer will switch to tight end. “Dakota came to me and wanted to talk about a potential position switch. He played linebacker and special teams. He felt like he’d like to try a F tight end spot, somewhat what Aaron Hernandez did in New England.” O’Brien said no position change is made without consulting the staff.
- O’Brien will call the offensive plays in April’s Blue-White game. “I won’t be commentating on anything,” he said. Former coach Joe Paterno had joined the radio broadcast during the spring scrimmage. When asked whether he’ll call offensive plays for both sides, O’Brien quipped, “That’s under staff discussions. All I know is we’re gonna win.”
- O’Brien did not specifically address former Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien (no relation) but did say he’s open to transfers if they would add value to the roster. “They still have to be Penn State-type guys,” O’Brien said. “Those are few and far between. Not just anybody can transfer in here.”
- O’Brien gave the coaching staff the week off for Spring Break.
