Joe Paterno ate his birthday cake, “but I didn’t need it,” he told reporters Wednesday morning.

The head football coach also was serenaded by his Penn State team when he turned 84 on Tuesday, the Tampa Tribune reported.

In a report posted Wednesday, the Tribune notes that Paterno has since returned to the practice field in Florida, prepping for the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1.

“We’ve been lucky with the weather,” Paterno said, according to the Tribune report.
