Penn State men’s hockey is back in the Top 10 for the first time since the 2016-17 season as the Nittany Lions checked in at the No. 6 spot in this week’s USCHO poll.
The ranking is the highest for Penn State in two seasons although the Nittany Lions have spent the vast majority of the previous two years ranked the Top 20. Penn State finished the 2017-18 campaign ranked 12th following a second-straight postseason loss to Denver in Allentown.
The Nittany Lions opened the season ranked 16th in the nation.
Penn State moved up four spots following their 4-2 victory over No. 19 Princeton on Friday night. They also received a first-place vote in the poll for the first time since January 23, 2017.
The Nittany Lions are 5-0-0 record, and three of those wins have come against ranked opponents, with both teams making last season’s NCAA Tournament.
No. 6 Penn State will be back in action this weekend with a two-game series at Pegula Ice Arena against Arizona State. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday. The Nittany Lions are ranked 8th in scoring offense this season with 25 goals through five games but have played as many as three fewer games of other teams in the top 10, including Arizona State, that has scored 30 goals through eight games.
