Penn State had beaten No. 10 ranked Michigan in two straight meetings, but the Wolverines reminded the Nittany Lions why they are ranked among the nation’s best on Saturday night beating Penn State 5-2.
Michigan opened the scoring with 12:12 left in the first period. Tyler Motte scored the first goal of the night from in front of net to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission. They scored twice more in the second 20 minutes. The first goal of the second period came six minutes into the stanza and the second just six minutes later. That gave Michigan a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.
Michigan would score eight minutes into the third period to push the lead out to four goals, but tallies by Penn State’s Curtis Loik and Taylor Holstrom would cut Michigan’s lead to 4-2 in the final few minutes of play. Michigan added an empty net goal in the final minute of play to secure a 5-2 final.
Despite the score, Penn State goaltender Matthew Skoff was strong, making key saves all night. He stopped 20 shots in the second period alone.
The Nittany Lions end a six game streak against teams based in Michigan with their only two wins in conference play including a program-first road victory in Big Ten play. All in all, Penn State proved that it is more than capable of playing against the best team’s in the conference.
The Nittany Lions will return to action next weekend when they visit No. 2/2 Minnesota on their final road trip of the regular season Feb. 28-March 1. The Feb. 28 matchup will air live on BTN at 9 p.m., while puck drop March 1 is set for 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Network.
