The Penn State fraternity charged with hazing this week has effectively been suspended from the university Interfraternity Council, IFC leaders announced Thursday.

In a written statement, IFC President Max Wendkos said the alleged activities at the Alpha Epsilon Pi house, 240 E. Prospect Ave., are ‘unacceptable and will not be tolerated within the Greek community.’

Members of the AEPi chapter hazed and provided alcohol to five minors in a Feb. 15 bid-admission ceremony, according to a criminal complaint filed by State College police. Two of the minors were admitted afterward to Mount Nittany Medical Center.

A message left at the national AEPi headquarters in Indianapolis was not immediately answered on Friday. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for May 5 in Centre County Court.

Meanwhile, the IFC is conducting its own investigation into the allegations against AEPi. The chapter cannot attend or host any social activities, recruit any new members or participate in any Greek events until that investigation is complete, the IFC announced.

In addition, for the time being, local AEPi members ‘may not meet as an organized group for any reason,’ according to the IFC announcement.

The restrictions will remain in effect until the IFC Peer Review Board makes a final decision about the chapter’s status, the IFC said.
