Penn State’s New Year’s Day bowl opponent was announced yesterday, and, as expected, the Nittany Lions (8-4) will face off against the No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers (9-3) in the Outback Bowl. This will be the third time the teams have met in a post-season game.
The contest is set to kick off at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday, January 1, 2007. The game will air on ESPN, the Penn State Sports Network and GoPSUsports.com.
The Penn State-Tennessee series is tied at 2-2. The Nittany Lions have won the last two contests, and the Volunteers won regular season games in Knoxville in 1971 (31-11) and 1972 (28-21). Penn State beat the Vols in the 1992 Fiesta Bowl (42-17) and the 1994 Citrus Bowl (31-13).
