Penn State vs. Ohio State Live Blog: Ohio State Wins In Double OT 31-24

There is no more waiting. Penn State and Ohio State are set to face-off inside a packed Beaver Stadium and a White Out crowd.

The Buckeyes are ranked No.12 in the nation with a 5-1 record and are coached by Urban Meyer who is 29-3 in his third season at Ohio State and 3-0 against Penn State all-time. 

Ohio State is quarterbacked by freshman JT Barrett who has passed for 1,615 tads and rushed for 383 yards, good enough for second on the team. The Buckeyes also boast a solid running game with Ezekiel Elliott who has 91 carries for 531 yards this season. Ohio State averages 259 yards on the ground per game but will face Penn State’s nation-leading rush defense.

Penn State is in the first year of the James Franklin era and currently in a two game slump after losing to Northwestern at home and on the road to Michigan. The Nittany Lions are 4-2 on the year and are led by quarterback Christian Hackenberg who has struggled behind his offensive line. Even so Hackenebrg has passed for 1,637 yards and has targeted receivers DaeSean Hamilton and Geno Lewis the most with Hamilton hauling in 43 passes for 560 yards and Lewis, 32 for 512.

Overtime 2:

Ohio State starts first and 10 at the 10 after a personal foul on their point after attempt a play earlier. It only takes a few plays for Ohio State to respond and take the lead.

Overtime 1:

Penn State loses the opening toss and will start on offense. An 8 play drive and wildcat run by Belton gives Penn State the lead.

Ohio State responds with a quick score of its own and it’s 24-24.

Fourth Quarter:

Penn State’s offense finds life and a score to pull within 3 as Blacknall hauls in a 24-yard pass from Hackenberg to cap off a 45 yard drive after a Mike Hull interception sets up a short field. The Nittany Lion defense holds strong again and forces a punt that starts Penn State at its own 9 yard line.

The Nittany Lions going 77 yards in 19 plays and a 31-yard field goal by Sam Ficken ties the game with 9 seconds to play.

Third Quarter:

Anthony Zettel returns an interception 40 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter as Penn State’s defense shutout Ohio State for the quarter. Penn State’s offense only has 89 yards of total offense but still finds itself down 10 in the final 15 minutes of play.

Second Quarter:

It’s more of the same for Penn State’s offense as the Nittany Lions rack up only 78 yards of offense heading into the break. Ohio State is held to a field goal after a long drive but Penn State can’t capitalize and the Buckeyes drive it 39 yards in 6 plays to make it 17-0 heading into the half.

Ohio State has 171 yards of offense while Penn State has managed to rush for only 11. 

Penn State is only averaging 35 yards a punt which has killed the Nittany Lions’ ability to flip the field at all. Ohio State hasn’t had to drive farther than 59 yards on any of its scoring drives.

First Quarter:

Penn State starts the game with the ball but an interception that looked to be incomplete leads to a short yardage situation and the Buckeyes score on a 10-yard run by Elliot to open the scoring. Zach Zwinak is carted off the field following a leg injury on the game’s opening play.

The Nittany Lions move the ball on their second drive but are forced to punt and Ohio State drives the ball but is stopped on a third and short by Deion Barnes.

Penn State drives the ball but punts the ball deep. Ohio State continues to drive the ball as the first quarter ends.

Penn State has 66 yards of offense, 50 through the air. The Nittany Lions are struggling to stop Eilliot on the ground, which is opening the pass for Barrett although he has only 27 yards through the air.

Pregame:

Penn State arrived at the stadium at 5:30 with a few players taking the field shortly after. As of 6:30 Hackenberg has taken a few throws with tight end Mike Gesicki. 

Beaver Stadium scoreboards showing the Michigan/Michigan State broadcast for a nice touch to the early pregame atmosphere.

With an hour until kick off Beaver Stadium is filling quickly as fans take in the warm ups.

James Franklin took a picture with a dozen or so recruits at the 50 handing out high fives and hugs to everyone.

Beaver Stadium is loud and rocking with just over 20 minutes until kick. Crowd knows the stakes are high but fans seems ready to give their all.
