Despite a semi-final loss to Northwestern on Friday, Penn State women’s lacrosse still qualified for the NCAA tournament. After an 11-6 season, the Nittany Lions were seeded second heading into the Big Ten tournament with regular season conference losses to Maryland and Northwestern.
The Nittany Lions will go on to face Winthrop University. The Eagles are 20-2 and just claimed a Big South tournament victory.
Penn State saw the NCAA tournament last year after claiming the Big Ten title. Its season came to an end after a loss to University of North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
The Nittany Lions are lead by Coach Missy Doherty, Captains Erika Spilker, Ally Heavens, Jenna Mosketti, and Abby Smucker. Senior standout Madison Cyr leads the offensive raid with the most goals for the season and eighth place in program history.
Both Cyr and junior defender Natalie Schmitt were recently named to the Big Ten Lacrosse All-Tournament team. Six Nittany Lions were included in the All-Big Ten season honorees: Cyr, Smucker, Mosketti, Madison Carter, Steph Lazo, and Katie O’Donnell. Carter was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Monday.
The Nittany Lions will face Winthrop on May 15.
