A pair of Penn State women’s volleyball standouts picked up Big Ten honors Monday, as juniors Simone Lee and Abby Detering were named the conference’s Player and Setter of the Week, respectively.

Lee and Detering both set career-highs in Penn State’s thrilling 3-2 upset over No. 1 Minnesota this past Wednesday. Lee, an outside hitter from Menomonee Falls, Wis., became the first Nittany Lion to eclipse the 30-kill mark (on the dot) since Nicole Fawcett accomplished the feat in 2007 with 31 against Cal Poly.

Detering, who hails from Mentor, Ohio, blew her previous best of 41 assists out of the water with 61 against the Golden Gophers. Lee and redshirt freshman Tori Gorrell posted a match-high 11 kills apiece in the team’s 3-0 sweep of Rutgers, while Detering dished out another 40 assists in the victory.

Lee has led or co-led Russ Rose’s squad offensively in 15 of Penn State’s 17 matches thus far (14-3, 6-0) and is currently fifth in the Big Ten with 241 kills this season. Detering sits in third place among B1G setters with 236 asssists during conference play after winning the starting job.
