Construction for the Whitehall Road project will continue next week with the removal of the concrete island at the intersection of Whitehall Road/University Drive and Atherton Street, PennDOT announced Thursday.

Additionally, drainage items will be installed near the Research Drive intersection, and trees will be cut and trimmed throughout the project route as well.

As a result, drivers may encounter flaggers at various locations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. starting the week of April 2. Work is dependent on weather and scheduling.

The $10.3 million project includes roadway-widening, the addition of a center left turn lane, marked bicycle lanes, new traffic signals, drainage improvements, waterline relocation and roadway paving.

The three-mile project stretches from Route 26 to Atherton Street and is expected to complete in fall 2013.
