PennDOT will make repairs this week to a section of Route 45 in Pine Grove Mills that was damaged as a result of asphalt bleed in July.
A contractor will mill the road on Thursday starting at Deepwood Drive and continuing approximately 1 mile west, PennDOT wrote in a news release. Paving of the same section will occur on Friday. Schedules are weather dependent.
Flaggers will be in the roadway to provide traffic control during daylight hours.
The road was damaged on July 7 during a shoulder widening operation for the ongoing Pine Grove Mills bicycle and pedestrian improvements project.
The damage resulted from an asphalt bleed, which occurs when hot weather causes asphalt binder to soften and rise to the surface. Heavy equipment being used in the shoulder widening then picked up aggregate because of the bleed, causing the road damage, according to PennDOT.
Since then, PennDOT has asked drivers to slow down and exercise caution when traveling through the area because of uneven pavement and rough road conditions.
The repair work comes just before the road will see heavy traffic headed to Ag Progress Days at Rock Springs, which takes place Aug. 12-14.
