The Pennsylvania Military Museum, 51 Boal Avenue in Boalsburg, currently is featuring several temporary exhibits in the museum gallery, including one focused on the Medal of Honor.

“The Ultimate Sacrifice” is an exhibit of Foster J. Sayers’ Medal of Honor. As a private first class serving with Company L, 357th Infantry, 90th Division during World War II, Sayers, of Howard, was awarded the medal for “conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in combat on Nov. 12, 1944 near Thionville, France.”

Without regard for his own safety, Sayers ran toward his objective and set up his machine gun 20 yards from the enemy. As his comrades needed to advance, he drew the enemy’s attention.

He picked up his gun, charged through withering machine gun and rifle fire and killed 12 German soldiers with close-range fire. Sayers was killed by heavy enemy return-fire.

“In honor of Mr. Sayers’ service and sacrifice, we will be exhibiting the medals awarded to him marking the 75th anniversary of his heroic actions,” said PMM administrator Tyler Gum. “We will have his Medal of Honor, Purple Heart and Bronze Star on exhibit together — it is quite moving to read the citation and see the medals.

“Pfc. Sayers’ indomitable fighting spirit, aggressiveness and supreme devotion to duty live on as an example of the highest traditions of the military service.”

The exhibit will be on display for six months.
