A 56-year-old man died after being struck by a driver Friday evening on Port Matilda Highway near Cold Stream Dam in Philipsburg.
Joseph W. Mayes, of Philipsburg, stepped into the eastbound lane of the road at about 6:50 p.m. and was hit by the driver of 2017 Ford Escape traveling eastbound, state police at Rockview wrote in a crash report.
The crash occurred during what police described as rainy and dark conditions, and the driver, a 58-year-old Kylertown woman, did not see Mayes until impact, according to the report. The impact sent Mayes into the stream.
The three occupants of the vehicle pulled Mayes out of the stream and began performing CPR until a state trooper and Moshannon Valley EMS arrived.
Mayes, however, succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries. The two passengers were not injured.
A crash investigation closed the eastbound lane for about two hours on Friday night.
Philipsburg Fire Department, Moshannon Valley EMS, the Centre County Coroner’s Office and Emigh Towing assisted state police at the scene.
