Three Charged in State College Assault That Left Man Hospitalized

State College police on Thursday arrested three southeastern Pennsylvania men for a November assault that left another man hospitalized with a brain bleed.

Kevin M. Lewis-Stevens, 20, of Norristown; Darius S. Shields, 19, of Philadelphia; and Rondale J. Stewart, 19, of Eagleton, are accused of punching the man unconscious during a fight at about 1:15 a.m. on Nov. 6 on the 400 block of East Calder Way in downtown State College.

The 22-year-old man who was attacked was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville to be treated for a subarachnoid bleed and an occipital bleed, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

A friend of the man told investigators they were visiting State College for a basketball tournament and were walking down the street when he engaged in an argument with several people they did not know. The friend said the argument did not seem serious until one of the men punched the alleged victim in the head and knocked him to the ground.

Lewis-Stevens, Shields and Stewart fled the scene but later returned and began fighting again, according to the affidavit. Video recorded by a witness from a nearby apartment allegedly showed one of the men punch the victim in the head while he was still unconscious.

Police said they confirmed identity of the suspects through security video footage and witness testimony.

Shields is charged with one first-degree felony count of aggravated assault, two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. Lewis-Stevens and Stewart were each charged one first-degree felony count of aggravated assault, one misdemeanor count of simple assault and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

The three men were arraigned by District Judge Don Hahn, who set unsecured bail for each at $27,500. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for Wednesday.
