Police Issues Tips for a Safe Halloween

Though State College was just announced as the second safest metropolitan area in the country, it is still important to take care to keep it that way.  In that spirit, the State College Police Department has issued a release with important reminders for Halloween safety.

For community members who will not be trick-or-treating, police request that motorists take extra care when driving, as children will often be wearing dark clothing and could potentially dart out in front of your car.

Parents are urged to make sure their child’s costume allows for freedom of movement and good visibility; police recommend a light-colored costume or something with reflective strips on it.  Giving children a flashlight and insisting that they trick-or-treat with a friend, a group, or an adult are other ways to ensure their safety.  Also, encourage your children stay within their own neighborhood and agree on a route ahead of time.

For residents handing out treats, police ask that, for safety purposes, you only give store-wrapped candies, or non-edible treats such as stickers, crayons, or party favors.  Making sure the walkways and the front of your home are lit is also important.

Trick-or-treaters are reminded to wear  bright colors or reflective costumes and be aware of traffic.  Go out with friends or an adult and don’t eat any candy until your parents have checked it.  Stay away from houses that are not lit or don’t have decorations on it.

Parents are urged to contact police if they find anything suspicious in their children’s treat bags.  A good rule of thumb is to discard any treats that are not in good condition.

Trick-or-treating hours are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this evening.
