Police: Reported ATM Theft Not a Crime After All

State College police say the man identified as a suspect in an ATM thief is not a criminal.

Authorities released an image of a man Wednesday believed to be responsible for a reported ATM theft. However, police said Thursday the man has been identified and he did not commit a crime and most importantly that a theft did not occur.

“The investigation revealed that there was no theft of money at the ATM,” says State College Police Sgt. T.A. Scholton

After media outlets reported Wednesday the theft and publicized a photo of the suspect, the suspect contacted police to clear up the matter. Police say further investigation revealed the suspect did not intentionally withdraw funds from the victim’s account and believed the cash came from his account. It is unclear how the ATM was able to accept the man’s card and at the same time release cash from the victim’s account.

Police also say the bank credited the victim’s account. 

The incident happened June 13 at First National Bank in the 1400 block of East College Avenue.

Police say an elderly woman left her ATM card in the machine after completing a transaction and drove away. Later, $100 was found to be missing from the account.
