Parking in downtown State College may require some extra effort for the next week or so. The Pugh Street Parking Garage has been shut down for repairs.

Workers will be performing preventative maintenance on the building to prevent any major structural problems from happening. “It’s sort of little Band-Aid fixes, and if you do the little Band-Aid fixes, you don’t ever have to do the major surgery,” Borough Parking Manager Charles DeBow says.

It’s cheaper and more effective to maintain the garage through periodic repairs, he says, then to build a new one, which would take much longer.

“Basically, our studies have shown that the cost of preventative maintenance sort of outweighs the years of what it would cost to build a new garage,” DeBow says.

Every year an engineer inspects the garages and gives the borough a list of minor maintenance issues to address to ensure that bigger problems don’t occur in the future.

The heavily-used Pugh Street Garage should re-open June 16. Meantime, the other downtown parking garages are open. That includes the garage in the 100 block of South Fraser Street and the garage in the 200 block of West Beaver Avenue. Click HERE for more information on parking.
