I had originally intended to write about a different subject this week, but given the tragic passing of Dr. Rick Madore, I felt it was important to share my feelings about this extraordinary man.
Although many people in Centre County knew Rick better than I did, he still touched my life in a very positive way. He was the definition of the ‘servant-leader.’ He wasn’t looking for glory or praise; he simply wanted to make life better for everyone around him. His family meant the world to him, and many of his activities were intended to make life better for them as well as many others.
I would run into the perpetually cheerful and energetic local dentist at St. Paul’s Methodist Church where our families worship, the State College YMCA, at various Penn State sporting events and area school events.
The real mark of a great leader is how he or she responds to adversity. Anyone can lead in good times. Rick, and others, stepped up for the ‘greater good’ during a particularly difficult time in our school district’s history. They took on a host of challenging issues and were making steady improvements. I hope the remaining members of the board will carry on with the good works that Rick was spearheading.
Through it all, Rick maintained a positive and professional demeanor and led by example. I don’t know if his heart attack was congenital or if the stresses of his many activities just took its toll. I do know that Rick’s intentions and motivations were sincere and that he was a dedicated volunteer who genuinely wanted to improve lives.
It didn’t matter which role — husband, father, dentist, swim club volunteer, Boy Scout leader, friend — Rick gave the same passionate energy to them all.
Over the past few months there have been too many parents of State College high school students who have passed away long before their time. This has brought many people in the community together to help those families impacted by these tragic losses.
Rick’s family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in Rick’s name to the Centre Volunteers in Medicine, at 2520 Green Tech Drive, Suite D, State College, PA 16803.
My heart goes out to his wife Patty and his children McKenzie, Madison and Andy. I hope you will pray for them and support them during this time of grieving.
Dr. Rick Madore paid the ultimate price for his role as a community leader.
Help us to honor Rick over these coming months by continuing to support his work and by remembering his family.
