Sandusky Ordered to Submit to Megan’s Law Assessment

Jerry Sandusky is headed for the Megan’s Law List.

Judge John Cleland signed an order when the former Penn State defensive coordinator was convicted on 45 of 48 counts of abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period, remanding him to submit to an evaluation by the State Sexual Offender Assessment Board.

Thomas Young, Director of the Centre County Probation and Parole Department, said the assessment is conducted whether Sandusky continues to maintain his innocence or falls in line with the jury of his peers that found him guilty on enough charges to put him in jail for at least a lifetime.

“Some offenders choose not to participate in the interview,” Young said. “They’ll do the assessment based on documentary evidence.”

Typically, the evaluation takes about 90 days – the conclusion of which Sandusky will return to the Centre County Courthouse for his sentence. Young said “some time” given the amount of information the investigators have to assess.

Young said generally, when someone pleads guilty to a sexual offense and an assessment is mandated, demographic information including where the offender can be located and contacted is forwarded to the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board in Harrisburg, where the an evaluator will be assigned to the case.

Sandusky’s information has been sent to Harrisburg, Young said, but it could be “some time” before he’s logged in the Megan’s Law registry.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted on Friday and taken into custody at 10:09 p.m. after his bail was revoked.

He is currently in solitary confinement and is on suicide watch. Karl Rominger, one of Sandusky’s defense lawyers, told phillyburbs.com his client is “defiant,” and “not suicidal.”

“He wants people to know he’s not guilty,” Rominger told the website.

The lawyer also tweeted after seeing Sandusky Monday morning, “Just visited Jerry #Sandusky in Centre County jail. He is doing well.”
