Saquon Barkley to Miss Remainder of NFL Season Following ACL Tear

Saquon Barkley will miss the remainder of the 2020-21 NFL Season following the announcement that he has torn his ACL, the New York Giants confirmed the news on Monday morning. Barkley had to be carted off the field following a hit during the Giants’ Sunday afternoon meeting with the Chicago Bears.

According to the Giants, Barkley will undergo surgery to deal with the injury “in the near future.”

Barkley was among a handful of NFL stars to sustain injuries on Sunday, joining former Nittany Lions Yetur Gross-Matos and Chris Godwin among notable former Penn State players to miss time due to injury.

The injury marks the second of his professional career but first major injury in his career overall. Barkley managed to carry a significant load while at Penn State, missing just two games early in his career with an ankle sprain, otherwise missing no time for any bumps or bruises while playing in State College.

Last season Barkley missed some time due to a similar sprain but returned to play out the rest of the Giants’ 2019-20 campaign, finishing the season with 1,003 rushing yards and 438 receiving yards. He had, until Sunday afternoon, otherwise sustained no significant injuries.

The Giants will miss Barkley’s production, even limited in the running game due to a much maligned offensive line, Barkley’s playmaking ability catching passes in space continues to make him one of the most explosive and dangerous players in the league.
