Schlow Centre Region Library patrons now have free access to more than 30,000 films from the on-demand video streaming service Kanopy.
Library card holders can sign up to start streaming films instantly by going to schlowlibrary.org. Movies can be streamed from any computer or mobile device and through Apple TV, Roku and Chromecast by downloading the Kanopy app at schlowlibrary.kanopy.com.
‘Streaming video is a big step for us,’ Maria Burchill, head of adult services, said in a release. ‘There aren’t many services out there that allow library subscriptions, but we were keen to offer one, especially as Amazon, Netflix and Hulu have become so popular. It will be exciting to see how the community rates this one.’
Kanopy offers access to award-winning documentaries, indie and classic films, world cinema, and rare and hard-to-find titles. The service showcases films that have ‘unique cultural and social value,’ some films that are impossible to find elsewhere and programming that features diversity, with a variety of foreign-language films and films focused on race and current affairs, according to Schlow.
The collection includes indie favorites such as ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ and ‘2 Days in Paris,’ classics like ‘The Wrath of God’ and ‘Seven Samurai,’ and documentaries such as the Academy Award-nominated ‘I Am Not Your Negro’ and Sundance winner ‘Mother of George.’
‘Like [library e-services] Flipster, Freegal and OverDrive, patrons can access all this content, including educational children’s television shows, from the convenience of their living rooms,’ Burchill said.
