Snow Causes Cancellations, Crashes Around Centre County

Snowfall overnight Monday into Tuesday morning has caused cancellations and tricky travel conditions around Centre County.

Penn State has canceled classes, activities and non-essential work at University Park through 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The university first delayed the start time to 10 a.m. then noon before extending cancellations to 5 p.m. as snow continued to fall throughout the area.

Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola school districts were closed or had Flexible Instruction Days because of the snow. State College Area School District had a previously scheduled day off.

Speed limits on Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania were reduced to 45 mph between exit 97 for Brockway/DuBois to the west and the New Jersey state line to the east as of 11:30 a.m.

In Centre County, a crash involving two tractor-trailers at about 9:40 a.m. at mile marker 148 on I-80 westbound in Snow Shoe Township resulted in secondary crashes and a lane closure until about noon. Nearby at mile marker 131 on I-80 eastbound in Clearfield County, a crash had all lanes closed from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Two more crashes were reported at about 11:50 a.m. at mile markers 144 of of I-80 westbound and 141 of I-80 eastbound in Snow Shoe Township. A lane restriction was in place as of noon.

A lane restriction was in place as of about 12:10 p.m. at mile marker 168 of I-80 westbound in Marion Township for a reported tractor-trailer off the roadway and on its side.

Centre Hall Mountain was temporarily closed after a tractor-trailer jackknifed at about 8:15 a.m. on the 800 block of South Main Street in Spring Township near the American Legion.

About 2 inches of snow had fallen in the State College area by 8 a.m. and about 2 inches more were expected by early afternoon. The National Weather Service at State College issued a winter weather advisory for Centre County from Monday evening until noon on Tuesday.
