Snow Emergencies, Closings and More Announced as Winter Storm Hits Centre County

Snow continued falling Sunday into Monday morning in Centre County, and through Tuesday morning the area could see up to a foot of snow.

The National Weather Service at State College has issued a winter storm warning from 5 a.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Tuesday for most of central Pennsylvania, including Centre County.

According to the NWS warning, heavy snow with total accumulations of 8 to 14 inches is expected between Sunday morning and Tuesday morning in southern Centre County, including the State College, Bellefonte and Penns Valley areas.

AccuWeather, which is forecasting 8 to 12 inches for the State College area, expects the snow to taper off late Monday night. The heaviest snow is expected early Monday morning through late afternoon.

Northern Centre County is expected to see 8 to 12 inches of snow.

Motorists are advised that travel may be difficult today through Monday.

Here’s a look at the impacts of the storm so far. This list will be updated:

Snow Emergencies

• State College Borough has declared a snow emergency as of 5:30 p.m. Sunday. All vehicles must be removed from public roads to allow for the public works department to clear and remove snow. All parking regulations will be strictly enforced, and no parking permissions will be granted for the duration of the snow emergency. Any vehicles remaining on the road may be ticketed or towed.

• College Township has declared a snow emergency effective 5 a.m. Monday. Vehicles must be removed from public streets until 48 hours after the snowfall has ended or streets have been cleared to the curb. Vehicles parked on the street during a snow emergency are subject to towing.

• Ferguson Township declared a snow emergency beginning 11 a.m. Monday and lasting until 48 hours after snowfall has ended. Vehicles must be removed from township streets or face ticketing or towing.

• Harris Township has declared a snow emergency beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday. All vehicles must be removed from public streets by 6 p.m. or face ticketing. Parking is available for those without off-street options in Nittany View, Blue Spring and Yoder Preserve. Street parking is prohibited until 24 hours after snowfall has ended and residents should wait for notice from the township before re-parking.

• Patton Township has declared a snow emergency beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Parking on township streets is prohibited until the emergency is lifted.

• Penn State has declared a ‘Midnight Clear’ for Sunday night into Monday. Parking will be prohibited at all faculty/staff surface parking lots on the University Park campus, including Innovation Park, from midnight Sunday night through 7 a.m. Monday morning. The roof levels of all four campus parking decks are closed .

Overnight parking for faculty, staff and departmental vehicles will be available at several locations.

Schools

• State College Area School District schools are closed on Monday for all students, including virtual. The day will be made up on May 28.

• Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte Area and Penns Valley Area school buildings will be closed on Monday and students in each district will have a flexible instruction day.

Delays and Closings

• Mount Nittany Health announced Physician Group practices are closed on Monday. Practices will contact patients about appointments and will offer telehealth appointments if appropriate.

The following locations will open at noon: Breast Cancer Center, Sieg Neuroscience Center, Center for Wound Care, Pain Management Program, Cancer Care Partnership and medical center outpatient programs. Patients should call 855-405-8540 before traveling to their appointments during severe weather conditions.

Mount Nittany Medical Center, including the emergency department, and Mount Nittany Health Surgical Center remain open. The COVID-19 vaccine clinic also is running with normal hours.

•  Penn State Health Medical Group State College locations will reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday for in-person appointments. Appointments previously scheduled for earlier than 10 a.m. will be virtual visits. Penn State Health Medical Group will contact impacted patients. 

The locations operated on virtual visits only on Monday.

• Schlow Centre Region Library is closed on Monday.

• State College Public Works has completed the “priority” collections for Monday in commercial collection. They will continue with normal collection Tuesday morning or when it is safe to do so.  Bulk item collection is on schedule Monday.  Brush collection will be completed once staff is freed up from snow removal.  As of Monday morning, residential refuse collection for Tuesday is on schedule.

Interstate Restrictions

• PennDOT has restricted the speed limit on Interstate 99 in Centre, Blair and Bedford counties and Interstate 80 in Centre, Clearfield and Clinton counties to 45 miles per hour. Commercial vehicles must move to the right lane. I-99 and I-80 in those counties also under the Level 1 vehicle restriction plan. Vehicles not permitted include tractors without trailers, tractors with unloaded or lightly loaded trailer, enclosed cargo delivery trucks, passenger vehicles towing trailers, RVs, buses and motorcycles.
